South Sudan: Materials Development Specialist

BRAC is planning to start the implementation of the Community-based Education Project in South Sudan with geographical focus in Greater Equatoria area (former States of Central, Eastern and Western Equatoria) and former Northern Bar el Ghazal State. Through the components of Community Girls Schools (CGS) and Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), the project aims to improve the learning outcomes of formerly out of school children and youth, especially girls, in South Sudan through a scalable model of holistic community-based alternative education that has the potential to create a lasting effect on South Sudan’s Alternative Education System. This will be accomplished by achieving two interrelated intermediate outcomes – i) increased equitable access to safe, secure, quality, inclusive education and learning by marginalised children and adolescents, and ii) improved equitable and coordinated provision of innovative, safe, quality, gender-responsive and evidence-based non-formal primary education for children and adolescents. To effectively deliver the project, BRAC intends to recruit staff for the following project positions:

MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST

The position shall ensure efficient and effective reviewing and revising of education materials for ALP and CGS components of the Project. The purpose of this role is to provide technical support in aspects of the in-house development, design, creation, editing, and quality-assuring of Grade-appropriate Learning & Teaching Materials, to meet all learning needs in the project.

Responsibilities

  1. Review and revise Community Girls Schools and Accelerated Learning Programme materials for consistent use in the Accelerated Education System in South Sudan

  2. Works with the Ministry of Education’s and General Instruction of South Sudan AES Technical Working Group to ensure that the accelerated learning program (CGS and ALP) curriculum materials meet the standards set by the curriculum review sub-committee.

  3. Contribute to the professional development of materials required for training teachers, Programme Organisers , State , County and Payam education officers in the use of the revised new curriculum for South Sudan

  4. Revise and Adapt existing Accelerated Learning Materials and Community Girls Schools related materials, including designing, editing, revising, and use of materials for both teachers and students.

  5. Work with other technical program team to design and write training modules that prepare teachers and Programme Organisers to implement the revised curriculum of South Sudan.

  6. Liaise with the Ministry of Education and General Instruction at National, State and County level as counterparts, as appropriate, as well as with relevant project field level staff.

  7. Develop new curriculum materials as needed, including instructional guides for teachers and workbooks for students

  8. Identify and collaborate with additional technical resource persons, if needed, to provide input and feedback to the revision of ALP /CGS materials and or curriculum.

  9. Oversee the technical aspects of materials production, especially printing, ensuring that all electronic files are made print ready and that printer has needed elements. Conduct review and editing of printing proofs.

  10. Design plan for appropriate distribution and utilization of curricular materials, coordinating with the BRAC Chief of Party and Project Team members

  11. Serve as resource person to Master Trainers who will deliver training to teachers, Programme Organisers and other MoGEI staff; observe and give feedback on professional development and delivery of training sessions, and make recommendations for improving the training design.

  12. Develop procedures for, and take the lead in, undertaking a comprehensive quality assurance to ensure that education materials developed meet highest quality standard possible.

  13. Provide advice on ongoing and emerging assumptions, risks and mitigating factors with respect to the roll-out of the new learning materials and delivery strategy.

Qualifications and experience

· A Master’s Degree in Education, Teacher Education, Curriculum Studies/Design, Pedagogy, or the development of classroom-based Instructional Materials;

· A minimum of 7 years of experience in the creation, design, editing, revision, updating, and quality-assuring of Grade-appropriate Learning & Teaching Materials (LTM);

· Experience of building the capacities of and mentoring Teachers, Teacher Educators and Academics with respect to the creation of Learning and Teaching Materials

· Excellent IT skills, incl. all MS Office applications

· Excellent LTM planning, writing and editing skills with the ability to work under tight deadlines;

· Strong communication, inter-personal and presentation and networking skills

· Skills in classroom teaching and pedagogy

· Skills in mainstream desktop publishing applications is added advantage

· Excellent written and oral English language;
