South Sudan: Environmental Engineer

BRAC is planning to start the implementation of the Community-based Education Project in South Sudan with geographical focus in Greater Equatoria area (former States of Central, Eastern and Western Equatoria) and former Northern Bar el Ghazal State. Through the components of Community Girls Schools (CGS) and Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), the project aims to improve the learning outcomes of formerly out of school children and youth, especially girls, in South Sudan through a scalable model of holistic community-based alternative education that has the potential to create a lasting effect on South Sudan’s Alternative Education System. This will be accomplished by achieving two interrelated intermediate outcomes – i) increased equitable access to safe, secure, quality, inclusive education and learning by marginalised children and adolescents, and ii) improved equitable and coordinated provision of innovative, safe, quality, gender-responsive and evidence-based non-formal primary education for children and adolescents. To effectively deliver the project, BRAC intends to recruit staff for the following project positions:

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER

The position of Engineer for the Environment seeks to ensure that the implementation of BRAC education programme takes considerable implications of environmental impact. The position holder shall help in identifying mitigation measures and ensure that these measures are implemented within the global best practices leading to environmentally-sensitive approach to programming.

Responsibilities

  1. Participate in the pre-project assessments and identification of school sites.

  2. Prepare reports, sketches, workings drawings and specifications for advising identification of school sites and environmental remedial actions to be undertaken in each school.

  3. Conduct environmental assessment to establish the environmental impact of the education project and device and design ways to minimise this impact.

  4. Lead in planning and designing systems to treat and remove wastes, such as waste water and solid wastes, in schools and wider project areas.

  5. Through regular monitoring, identify environmental implications of the education project throughout implementation and provide technical support to address identified gaps.

  6. Where school construction or rehabilitation is involved, the Environmental Engineer shall manage such projects from start to finish, ensuring frequent site visits and inspections.

  7. Supervise contractors carrying out works in school construction and rehabilitation, in consultation with WASH Officer.

  8. Collect water and land samples, and send them to be tested for pollution as needed, and advise on treatment methods.

Qualifications and Experience

• Degree or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health or a related field

• Experience in the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene related projects preferably in the humanitarian field and education sector

• Sound knowledge of water, sanitation and hygiene principles for humanitarian assistance
